Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Temporary workers at Chuchura Municipal Corporation in Hooghly protested on Christmas Day, blocking roads near Pipulpati Five Crossroads due to non-payment of wages. Workers have claimed that despite being promised their salaries would be deposited by Tuesday, the payments had not been credited to their accounts. The protest, which began as a work stoppage, escalated into a blockade as workers demanded immediate resolution of the issue.
MLA Ashit Majumdar visited the protest site after being informed about the situation. He spoke to the workers and explained that the delay in payment was caused by technical issues with the bank’s server, preventing the transfer of funds. Majumdar reassured the workers that their salaries would be deposited into their accounts within a few hours, leading to the lifting of the blockade.
The issue of unpaid wages has been ongoing for the past two months, with workers not receiving their salaries for that period. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee intervened in the matter and allocated three crore rupees to settle the pending wages. The funds were provided as an advance to pay the workers for the last two months, with the understanding that this amount would need to be reimbursed. Additionally, it was confirmed that the workers’ December wages would be paid in January, as part of a broader effort to resolve the payment delays.
